ArcaViso begins with a way of looking: beyond appearances, toward the structures beneath them, while remaining willing to question the person doing the looking.
The name is a Latinized coinage. We give it the senses of depth and attentive observation. Its meaning is an intention for this publication, not an inherited dictionary definition.
Its motto is:
IN INCERTO RATIO DUX
Reason as our guide amid uncertainty.
In incerto places us within uncertainty. Ratio carries the sense of reason and reasoning, as well as calculation and reckoning. Dux is a guide.
The motto makes no promise that reason can remove uncertainty. We begin with uncertainty as a condition of judgment. Evidence, calculation and argument can still give us direction when an outcome cannot be known in advance.
Looking beneath appearances
Another source of the name's meaning is a question in chapter ten of Laozi, also known as the Dao De Jing:
滌除玄覽,能無疵乎?
We read this as a question about clearing one's faculty of observation: can it be kept free of blemish? The words 玄覽, pronounced Xuanlan, are also the founder's chosen courtesy name. For ArcaViso, they connect a personal discipline of observation with the principles of our public writing.
Wang Bi's commentary begins its explanation of 玄 with:
玄,物之極也。
It also speaks of:
不以物介其明。
These phrases suggest, in our reading, attention to what lies at the furthest depth of things, together with a concern that what we encounter should not obstruct clarity. Heshang Gong's commentary turns toward the observer's own mind:
當洗其心,使潔淨也。
The instruction is to cleanse the mind. Its significance for us is not a claim to perfect detachment. It is the need to keep examining what has accumulated in the act of seeing.
This is a contemporary interpretation for research. The commentaries were not written about financial markets or statistical models. We borrow a discipline of attention from them; we do not treat them as ancient authority for a modern investment method.
The observer also introduces noise
Markets contain noise. Researchers introduce some of their own.
An existing opinion can determine which evidence feels persuasive. A model that took months to build can become difficult to question. A strong historical return can make a weak explanation seem convincing. An investment already held can turn the search for evidence into a search for reassurance.
These influences do not disappear because a calculation is numerical. They can enter through the choice of sample, the definition of a variable, the period selected for a chart or the decision to report one experiment and omit another.
This is why public research should preserve the path to a judgment, including the evidence that made us hesitate. A conclusion alone cannot show what was excluded along the way.
For us, 玄覽 therefore has two tasks. Look closely at the object of study, and keep clearing the observer's own biases. The first is incomplete without the second.
“What have I seen?” is a necessary question. We also need to ask: why do I believe it? What evidence would overturn my judgment?
Making judgment answerable to evidence
This is the basis of ArcaViso's approach to quantitative research.
We use quantitative methods to turn a judgment into a hypothesis that can be examined. What data does it depend on? Was that information available at the time? How was the sample selected? What happens after costs? Under which conditions should the explanation cease to hold?
If an idea loses its appeal once plausible costs or a different sample are considered, that is useful evidence. A result that challenges our judgment deserves attention even when it makes the story less satisfying.
A good-looking backtest is not a truth certificate. A complex model is not inherently more reliable. Complexity can help describe a problem, but it can also provide more places for assumptions and fitting choices to hide.
The important question is not whether a model can make our position look correct. It is whether the model can help us recognize an error sooner when our position is wrong.
That requires preserving objections as well as supporting arguments. It means distinguishing an observation from an explanation, recording assumptions before the result is known, and naming failure conditions that do not move whenever the evidence becomes inconvenient.
There will still be ambiguity. An adverse result may reflect chance, a bad assumption, a changed environment or a flawed implementation. Reason does not spare us the work of separating these possibilities. It gives that work a method.
A method for continuing without certainty
ArcaViso seeks a way of facing uncertainty, rather than a promise of certainty.
玄覽 concerns how we observe: looking beneath appearances while examining the limits of our own view.
Ratio concerns how we judge: giving evidence, calculation and reasoning a place to constrain belief.
In incerto describes the world in which those judgments are made.
Dux describes the role of a guide: enough direction to proceed, without pretending that the unknown has disappeared.
ArcaViso. IN INCERTO RATIO DUX.
滌除玄覽。 Clear the lens of observation; let reason guide us amid uncertainty.
Texts and quotations
The Chinese quotations remain in traditional characters. The chapter-ten passage and Wang Bi excerpts follow the Wang Bi commentary. The Heshang Gong quotation follows chapter ten of his commentary, as transcribed from the Sibu Congkan edition. Other transmitted texts use 使清潔也 or 使潔清也. The wording of a commentary depends on the edition; the English explanations above are our interpretations, not literal quotations from an English translation.
